CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Bea Waite

On a homestead outside of a small town near Marquette—Michigan’s upper peninsula

“Mom!”

Delia’s harsh whisper brought Bea’s head up, and she blinked multiple times. “What? Is something wrong?”

“No, everything’s okay. You were sleeping on a book, and that looked super uncomfortable.” She leaned over to peer at Bea’s face. “I can see the outline of the edges of the pages.”

Bea yawned, stretched, and looked around. She was at the dining room table, her pistol resting just out of reach and a book about electrical work directly in front of her, a large wet spot on the edge of the page.

She wrinkled her nose. “Looks like I was drooling.”

“Ew.” Delia tapped her fingers on the back of a chair. “Do you want me to make your coffee for you?”

“That would be amazing.” She placed her hands flat on the table and pushed herself up, then did more stretching, but her neck didn’t seem to be planning to loosen up anytime soon. “Ow. Sleeping like that was dumb. I’ll have a crick all day.”

“Sorry I didn’t come down and relieve you.” Delia clunked around in the kitchen, getting the kettle going and setting up the French press. “I guess I slept all night once I fell asleep.”

“It’s okay. I was up most of the night. I’ll take a nap this afternoon if I get a chance.” She closed the book. “I don’t think I understand any of this better than I did before I started reading. Maybe if I look at how the generator is hooked up to the house again, it’ll help.”

“I wish we could use the internet.” The kettle whistled, and Delia poured hot water over the grounds in the French press. “That would make it so much easier.”

“We got used to doing things that way, didn’t we? Be right back.” Bea ran upstairs to change and brush her teeth, and by the time she’d returned, Delia was ready to hand her a cup of hot coffee. “Thank you. This tastes amazing.”

“I can make breakfast too.”

“You’re the best. Thanks, honey.” Bea grabbed the book and retired to the living room with her coffee, but she couldn’t bring herself to crack open the boring volume again, instead leaning her head back on the sofa and staring out the window. Dawn had broken, but the lighting was still dim, and a steady but light rain fell. Delia moved around in the kitchen and then Bax and Storm started making noise upstairs as they got up and moving.

Finishing her coffee, she carried the mug back to the kitchen, rinsed it out, and then headed for the front door. “I’ll take Storm out and be back in a few minutes.”

Storm galloped right to her, dancing around and giving a little yip. Bax rushed after her. “I’ll put her suit on.”

“Hang on, bud.” She handed him a pair of rubber gloves from a box in the front closet. “Put those on, just in case.”

He complied, then got to work outfitting Storm to go out while Bea also readied herself.
